IEEE launches Ethically Aligned Design, First Edition

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) published the first edition of Ethically Aligned Design: A Vision for Prioritizing Human Well-being with Autonomous and Intelligent Systems (EAD1e). The document was conceived as part of the IEEE Global Initiative on Ethics of Autonomous and Intelligent Systems and provides scientific analyses as well as pragmatic and application-oriented recommendations that will serve as important references for the work of technologists, educators and politicians in the coming years. Ethically Aligned Design is a specific guide to standards, certification, regulation or legislation for the design, development and deployment of autonomous and intelligent systems.

AlgorithmWatch welcomes this publication and considers it an important step on the way to standards and certification of automated decision processes (ADM). We are convinced that ethical principles and social and political guidelines for ADM systems must be discussed among the broad public.

This is why we have translated the summary into German and made it available here, as it deserves attention in the German-speaking countries. The document does not reflect the views and assessments of AlgorithmWatch, but in our opinion is a valuable input for further discussion.
