Researcher & Project Manager

(20-30h/week)

About the project

A plethora of regulatory attempts are underway – at EU level and in member states – to mandate Facebook, Google, Twitter, YouTube and other intermediaries to patrol and monitor content, by blocking unwanted posts, or to ensure plurality and non-discrimination of sources. The reason: the influence of intermediaries on public discourse is perceived as overly powerful and damaging. However, it is doubtful whether current strategies will succeed in strengthening public discourse. AlgorithmWatch’s project starts here: By engaging with civil society and other stakeholders in a participatory design process, we will develop innovative governance/policy proposals and other tools. We will then feed them into the EU and member states’ policy processes.

Your Role

You play a pivotal role in the project: Based on your research skills and advanced knowledge on digital and media regulation, you are responsible for the creation and facilitation of the stakeholder network; you shape and coordinate an iterative process of creating a joint understanding of the effects of intermediaries on the public discourse and of developing adequate and effective ideas and policy proposals to mitigate these effects. You bring together analysis, discussion and feedback, translating them into the development of recommendations and policy agendas with and for stakeholders from civil society, media, academia, and business, as well was policy makers and the intermediaries themselves.

Your tasks

  • You co-design the strategic framework, project scope and project objectives in close cooperation with AlgorithmWatch’s executive director and staff and our project partners.
  • You identify and communicate with key stakeholders in the field of platform governance in Europe.
  • You research and write substantive preparatory documents for stakeholder dialogues.
  • You develop agendas and methods for stakeholder dialogues and co-facilitate workshops, convening experts from civil society, politics, academia, media, business and administration.
  • You communicate with our scientific partners in the project and prepare feedback.
  • You conduct analyses and compose articles to be published on AlgorithmWatch’s website and in mainstream media.
  • You participate in public events and present and discuss our positions with decision makers from all stakeholder groups.
  • You coordinate internal resources and the work of the international project partners.
  • You develop a detailed project plan, monitor and track progress.
  • You ensure that all milestones are completed on time and within scope.
  • You report to the donor.

Your profile

  • You hold a graduate degree (preferably on the MA/MSc/PhD level or equivalent) in law, journalism, political or social science, media or communication studies or a related field or at least 4 years of relevant project management / policy / legal work experience.
  • You have proven experience in managing projects either in academia, non-governmental organisations, public administration or the private sector.
  • You have advanced knowledge of digital and media regulation with a focus on platforms, intermediary liability, and disinformation.
  • You have strong writing skills, with the ability to present complexity in a comprehensible and precise manner.
  • You are a quick thinker with strong analytical and communication skills.
  • You have solid organizational skills including attention to detail and multitasking skills, with an ability to meet and prioritize multiple deadlines in a complex and fluid environment.
  • You have advanced understanding of social media and preferably hands on experience using Twitter and/or Facebook.
  • You speak English fluently. Good command of German is a plus but not mandatory.
  • You are willing and able to travel for up to three days at a time on a limited number of occasions.

What we offer

  • You work at one of the most interesting NGOs in the field, with a network of leading civil society organisations, academics, and policy makers.
  • You work with some of the best academics in the field of communication studies and communications law.
  • You work with a very diverse group of stakeholders – geographically, culturally, and professionally.
  • You enjoy a high level of autonomy and responsibility in an organisation with a flat hierarchy and an open and dynamic work culture.
  • If successful, your work will directly impact the thinking of key stakeholders and policy makers on the matter.
  • You work in a multi-disciplinary and growing team of highly dedicated professionals.
  • A workplace in the heart of Berlin.
  • A competitive salary commensurate with experience.
  • Flexible, family-friendly working hours.
  • An 18-month fixed-term contract (an extension is intended, dependent on funding)
